About the project

In 2013, the Sony Student Design Workshop focused on the theme of promoting "Wellness and Happiness". As part of the workshop, we teamed up with Sony's designers and worked together to generate ideas, come up with concepts, and ultimately develop a product called Bathbo. Bathbo is a multimedia entertainment device designed to enhance the bathing experience and promote wellness and happiness among young women living in urban areas. The product was showcased at the 2014 Sony Student Design Exhibition.

Idea generation

Wellness and happiness

At the outset, we engaged in a wide-ranging brainstorming process for two months, exploring various topics associated with either Wellness or Happiness. These topics covered a wide spectrum, ranging from preventing illnesses to taking selfies. We created a mind map and analyzed it to identify areas where Wellness and Happiness intersected. Eventually, we arrived at an intriguing area of overlap that centered around the activity of bathing, which is known as "Furo" in Japanese.

Target user

We chose to focus on urban young women as our target audience due to their increasing fascination with SPA. We conducted research into various aspects of their lives, such as their daily routines, hobbies, worries, aspirations, and so on.

Product Design

Sketch

We examined numerous methods of interaction and created various shapes based on each function. Some forms were affixed to the ceiling and operated remotely, while others were situated on the bathtub and activated by gestures.

Final Product

Ultimately, we opted for a pillow-shaped design due to considerations of ergonomics and spatial constraints within bathrooms. To enhance the functionality of the product, we installed two projectors, cameras, and motion sensors on the front, along with speakers on both sides.

Modes

Users have the option to select from various modes, including Chinese Painting Mode, Fantasy World Mode, and Summer Night Mode with a full moon. Moreover, they can interact with the water itself, and the possibilities are virtually limitless.
